Grunge used to be the coveted look. Ripped jeans, leather pants, denim cut offs with combat boots, oversized shirts, worn out tshirts with traces of a faded logo and plaid shirts to the name the like. Taylor Momsen took it too far with fishnets. Ashlee Simpson rocked the look with converse. Our homegrown Abbey Lee Kershaw jazzed up her style, spinning the grunge- meets- minimal look with the basics. If we believe Oscar Wilde’s mantra to be true, “Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months”, we are slowly waving goodbye to the overdone grunge look and heralding in the new cult look: lady- like.
To say I’m obsessed with Olivia Palermo is an understatement. I’m not even a huge fan of The City, but when I see her posing on every style page I just cant help but want to be her. I even cut my hair like hers – a lob (long bob for those who are fashion illiterate). It’s shoulder length and blunt and it’s fun to say the least. I had the long wavy boho mane of hair for about ten years with my only variation being side fringe, growing out side fringe and then opting for wispy layers to frame the face. It’s refreshing to have something different for once!
Olivia Palermo isn’t some old goof dressing in nanna’s old clothes. She takes elegantly cut pieces like tailored jackets, length defying mismatched skirts and then she wears unbelievable shoes. Seriously, they make your knees buckle. With the same formula as the ‘how to wear a trench coat’, Palermo’s style underlines the power of the shoe. When wearing a fabulous trench coat this season, don’t think for a second it’s a little boring. Wear an eye-catching shoe to toughen up the look and give you the ideal lady-like and stylish look that’s bold and brilliant.
When trying to master the lady-like look, avoid your boho inspired clothing and your grungy pieces. Mix your black and whites, love your pastel pinks and go for dresses that cinch at the waist. It’s all about embracing a woman’s curves with skirts and dresses with jackets, trenches and shoes like Horizon Taupe, which can give the perfect finishing touch to the modern lady.
